Fabrication of c-axis oriented polycrystalline ZnO by using a rotating magnetic field and following sintering

Abstract: We succeeded in fabricating c-axis (00l) oriented ZnO ceramics by using a rotating magnetic field and a subsequent sintering treatment. The degree of orientation in the green compact was about 0.5 along (00l) on the Lotgering scale. The degree of orientation increased to 0.99 after sintering at 1573 K. Particles can also be oriented in a static magnetic field, but along the direction of the a-axis or a,b-axes (h00), (hk0). These results show that selected axes can be oriented by controlling the magnetic field.… Show more

“…Applying a rotating magnetic field (RMF) in the horizontal plane of the particles gathers the magnetic susceptibility of all the particles along a single direction. 35),36) The merits of this method are that special template particles are unnecessary, and thus densification can be achieved easily. To date, we have fabricated crystal-oriented ceramic BNBT (x = 0.15) (hereafter, BNBT15) materials and improved the piezoelectric properties.…”

“…11)13) It can orient the axis of the highest diamagnetic susceptibility to one direction at least in principle as follows. 13)17) The diamagnetic susceptibility is different in principle axes in KNa 2 Nb 5 O 15 , and is » c < » a < 0. Placed in a high magnetic field, the c-axis should be oriented perpendicular to the magnetic field and the a-axis aligned parallel to the magnetic field.…”
