Fabrication of Lead‐Free (CH3NH3)3Bi2I9 Perovskite Photovoltaics in Ethanol Solvent

Abstract: The toxicity of lead present in organohalide perovskites and the hazardous solvent systems used for their synthesis hinder the deployment of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, an environmentally friendly route toward bismuth-based, lead-free (CH NH ) Bi I perovskites that utilize ethanol as the solvent is described. Using this method, dense and homogeneous microstructures were obtained, compared to the porous, rough microstructures obtained using dimethylformamide. Photovoltaic performances were enhanced, … Show more

“…[121] Worse still, even varying chemical potentials from the stoichiometric region does not eliminate the presence of deep defects. [132][133][134][135][136][137][138][139][140][141] Recently, Jain et al fabricated MA 3 Bi 2 I 9 nonperovskite films via the vapor assisted solution process by exposing the BiI 3 films to MA vapor. [121,129,130] Park et al [131] first examined 0D A 3 Bi 2 I 9 (A = Cs, MA) nonperovskites as light absorbers in solar cells with the regular mesoporous structure, where the A 3 Bi 2 I 9 films were prepared using the typical one-step spin coating method.…”

“…The fabricated MA 3 Bi 2 I 9 films are most suitable for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells than the pristine MA 3 Bi 2 I 9 films with pinholes . An enhanced open‐circuit voltage of 0.84 V is obtained in (MA) 3 Bi 2 I 9 perovskite by using ethanol as solvent . The film quality of (MA) 3 Bi 2 I 9 can be enhanced by high‐vacuum BiI 3 deposition and low‐vacuum transformation of BiI 3 to (MA) 3 Bi 2 I 9 .…”

“…However, the fabrication of closed and coherent layers of MBI is still challenging . Recently, Li et al demonstrated significant improvements by dissolving methylammonium iodide (MAI) and BiI 3 in a MA‐containing solution of ethanol . Layers fabricated via spin coating exhibited superior performance and structural properties compared with a solution without MA, proving the positive influence of MA on crystal formation.…”
