Fabrication of magnetite nanorods by ultrasound irradiation

Abstract: Magnetite nanorods have been prepared by the sonication of aqueous iron(II)acetate in the presence of β-cyclodextrin. The properties of the magnetite nanorods were characterized by x-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetization measurements. The as-prepared magnetite nanorods are ferromagnetic and their magnetization at room temperature is ∼78 emu/g. The particle sizes measured from transmission electron micrographs are about 48/14 nm … Show more

“…Gedanken and coworkers have reported various nanostructured metal oxide syntheses including TiO 2 , [50] Fe 3 O 4 , [51] a-Ni(OH) 2 , [52] GaO(OH), [53] In(OH) 3 , [54] and BaFe 12 O 19 . [55] In their syntheses, sonication of an aqueous metal salt solution is carried out under ambient conditions (usually in the presence of air) to prepare various forms of nanostructured metal oxides.…”

“…Using a sonochemical method, magnetite nanorods were successfully prepared starting from iron (II) acetate in the presence of b-cyclodextrin. [118] Magnetite nanodiscs were obtained on a large scale by a surfactant-assisted solvothermal process. [119] Composites Corr et al [120] fabricated silica-iron oxide nanocomposites via sol-gel one-step processing of an Fe(II) alkoxide and tetraethyl orthosilicate at various ratios.…”

“…24 Unlike sonochemistry method for iron nanoparticles and nanorods synthesis, 25,26 this ultrasonic-assisted method produced nanoscaled and crystalline magnetic particles without using high temperature and pressure (e.g. 5000 K and 1800 atm) and the additional thermal annealing treatment.…”
