Fabrication of One-Dimensional Polymer Nanowires by Templated Bipolar Electropolymerization Promoted by Electrophoretic Effect

Abstract: Electropolymerization with a nanoporous template is a straightforward method to address one-dimensional (1D) polymer nanowires, while the limited monomer diffusion into the nanopores tends to give tubular structure, resulting in lower mechanical strength. In this study, bipolar electrochemistry is employed for the construction of densely packed polymer nanowires. Bipolar electrochemistry is an electrochemical system with a low concentration of an electrolyte. Thus, the electrophoretic process concomitantly pro… Show more

“…Apart from the neuromorphic engineering community, the investigation can be an important contribution to various other domains wherein such interconnections and morphological shapes control their functionalities 23 30 . The approach can also be explored for pattering applications 37 and locomotion of conducting objects with similar techniques 38 , 39 . The modeling can also be translated to problems involving wireless electro-polymerization 16 , 40 .…”

“…We recently reported the use of a stacked electrolytic cell (Figure S10a) for the fabrication of one-dimensional polymer nanowires exploiting the synergy of electrophoresis and electropolymerization under bipolar conditions. 42 To investigate this configuration, we opted for a setup like the one reported in Figure S10b, where the camera is placed obliquely with respect to the BPEs to have a good focus on both the electrodes.…”

“…In this case, a template‐free perpendicular growth of PEDOT fiber arrays was achieved (Figure 2d) [40] . Also a split templated BPE was used for the synthesis of one‐dimensional poly‐3‐thiophenetrifluoroborate nanowires [41] . In this work, the BPE was composed of two ITO electrodes connected with each other and placed parallel to the feeder electrodes.…”
