Fabrication of Superhydrophobic and Superoleophilic Polystyrene Surfaces by a Facile One‐Step Method

Abstract: A facile one‐step method has been developed to prepare both superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surfaces of polystyrene (PS) without any chemical modification. A rough film consisting of micro‐bead and nano‐fiber mixed structures is formed by spraying a PS solution onto a large area and any type of substrate. The mixed structures with such unique wettability properties can be used in oil/water separation and as oil sorbents.magnified image

“…The petroleum industry also requires novel oil-water separation methods to improve oil recovery 4,5 . In the field of oil-water separation, materials with special wettabilities and micro-and nanostructures have attracted the attention of many researchers; these materials include polymer-coated meshes [6][7][8] , hydrogel-coated meshes 9 , polymer networks 10 and surface-modified meshes [11][12][13][14] , although for these methods, phase separation occurs readily in the oil-water mixture. If the mixture is undisturbed for a period of time, it will separate by itself to form a water layer and an oil layer.…”

“…Полистирол Разработан простой метод получения су пер-гидрофобных и суперолефильных поверхностей полистирола (ПС) без химической модификации [4]. Распылением раствора ПС на большую пло-щадь подложки любого типа формировали шеро-ховатую плёнку, состоящую из микрокристалли-ческих и нановолоконных смешанных структур.…”

“…Among these methods, polymer film casting, such as fluorinated copolymer [16] and polystyrene [11], have been proved to be a scalable methodology. For example, block copolymer were used to prepared superhydrophobic films through phase separation to form surface with variable morphology [17].…”

“…Considerable efforts have been focused on the development of superhydrophobic surfaces through the design of proper roughness. Various approaches, based on sol-gel [5][6][7][8], the sublimation of aluminum acetylacetonate [9], lithography [10], spinning [11], chemical etching [12] and others [13][14][15] were reported.…”
