a b s t r a c tDuring the last decades, a great number of innovative building envelope materials and façade components have been developed. The majority of these technologies promise significant improvements in energy efficiency and occupant's comfort, with products that are easily available in the market. However, it remains a challenge to assess the performance of such facades, leading to difficulties for efficient design, operation, and maintenance. As a consequence, the market adoption of adaptive facades is not realizing its full potential, resulting in missed opportunities for energy savings and improved occupant satisfaction. In this study, the current trends of adaptive facades are investigated, with particular emphasis on their performance assessment. Based on extensive literature review, the gaps in assessment of adaptive facades are determined and a novel object-based façade characterization and classification framework is proposed. Furthermore, a generic stakeholder map and process map are presented to explain current adaptive façade delivery practices. In addition, the findings of interviews and two focus group discussions with experts and specialists are presented to elucidate their expert opinions, leading to a validated framework of key performance indicators. As results of this paper, the gaps related to adaptive façade systems' assessment are identified with respect to the different actors and stakeholders, and insights and perspectives on current trends and future challenges of adaptive façade system assessment are provided.

The present study refers to Building-Integrated Solar Thermal (BIST) systems based on vacuum-tube collectors and it consists of two parts. In the first part, a literature review is presented, including studies about vacuum-tube technology (vacuumtube/BIST systems, the environmental profile of vacuum-tube collectors, etc.). Critical issues, for example related to the integration of vacuum-tube collectors into the building, are highlighted. The review shows that most of the proposed vacuumtube/BIST concepts are about façade-integration and there are few studies about the environmental profile of vacuum-tube collectors. As a continuity of the issues presented in the first part, the second part includes a case study about the environmental comparison of a vacuum-tube/BIST system with a flat-plate/BIST configuration, based on life-cycle analysis. The systems are gutter-integrated, patented and they have been developed/tested at the University of Corsica, in France. Multiple life-cycle impact assessment methodologies, environmental indicators, scenarios and databases are adopted. The results reveal that the energy-payback time is 1.8 and 0.5 years, for the flat-plate/BIST and the vacuum-tube/BIST, respectively, while by using recycling these values become 0.5 and 0.1 years, respectively. Energy-return-on-the-investment, greenhouse-gas payback time and avoided impact during use phase (by adoptingUSEtox, ecological footprint and France´s electricity as well as with reference domestic-gas-boiler CO 2.eq emissions) are also presented. The findings of the present work: 1) are compared with the literature and good agreement is observed, 2) verify that considerably higher impact can be avoided by utilizing the vacuum-tube/BIST instead of the flat-plate/BIST system.

The architectural design of light-permeable facadesa summary of recent trends and observations Projektowanie architektoniczne fasad przezroczystychpodsumowanie najnowszych nurtów i obserwacji Abstract Contemporary architectural transparency, understood as the optical property of the construction material, is constantly being redefined and, over the last two decades, new design trends have developed. These trends are the result of: (i) dynamic technological progress; (ii) advancement in the field of materials science; (iii) changes in the attitude of clients and users. Transparency is no longer limited to specific functions (e.g. illumination of the interior) but has become a tool of formal expression itself. This paper defines most recent trends, which are divided into two main types: (i) optical-perceptual -relying on phenomenal effects, (ii) geometrical -that differentiate the large group of spatial transformations developed from what was initially flat planar façade. AbstractWspółczesna przezroczystość w architekturze, rozumiana jako właściwość optyczna materiału budowlanego, jest stale redefiniowana. W ciągu ostatnich dwóch dekad pojawiły się nowe nurty w projektowaniu przezroczystych elewacji w architekturze. Nurty te są wynikiem: (i) dynamicznego postępu technologicznego;(ii) osiągnięć w dziedzinie materiałoznawstwa oraz (iii) zmiany w nastawieniu klientów i użytkowników. Przezroczystość nie ogranicza się już do pełnienia konkretnych funkcji (np. doświetlenie wnętrza), ale sama w sobie stała się narzędziem formalnej ekspresji. Niniejszy artykuł definiuje najnowsze nurty, które dzielą się na dwa główne typy: (i) optyczno-wrażeniowe -oparte na zjawiskach optycznych, (ii) geometrycznewyróżniające dużą grupę przekształceń przestrzennych początkowo płaskiej fasady.
