Facies stacking patterns in a modern arid environment: a case study of the Abu Dhabi sabkha in the vicinity of Al‐Qanatir Island, United Arab Emirates

Abstract: Supratidal (sabkha) to intertidal (microbial mat), and lowermost intertidal to shallowsubtidal (peloid-skeletal tidal flat) environments were studied along the Abu Dhabi coastline in the vicinity of Al-Qanatir (Al-Rufayq) Island. A transect from land to sea displays the following classic examples of supratidal to shallow-subtidal facies belts:(1) Inner, upper sabkha (upper supratidal), buckled polygonal halite crust displaying teepee structures; (2) Stranded beach ridges, forming low-relief topographic highs p… Show more

“…In the study area, mapped and described by Strohmenger et al. (2009), three representative locations referred to as Site 1 (24°8′55·60″ N; 54°6′9·60″ E), Site 2 (24°8′47·60″ N; 54°6′11·50″ E) and Site 3 (24°8′36·00″ N; 54°6′16·10″ E) are defined (Fig.…”

“…The basin has an area of 250,000 km 2 and is shallow and semi‐restricted which, combined with its high latitude and the presence of mountainous plateaus and deserts nearby, make the Gulf's climate the most extreme endured by key carbonate biota, such as reef building corals, anywhere (Purkis & Riegl, , ; Purkis et al ., ; Foster et al ., ). In contrast to carbonate platforms with well‐developed shelf edges that are typical for the Caribbean, the Arabian platform exhibits a gentle bathymetric profile, thereby indicating a shallow‐ramp geometry (Shinn, ; Burchette & Wright, ; Uchupi et al ., ; Kirkham, ), ideal for depositing widespread and laterally continuous facies bodies (Alsharhan & El‐Sammak, ; Purkis et al ., ; Strohmenger et al ., , ; Jameson & Strohmenger, ; Lokier et al ., ; Lokier & Fiorini, ).…”
