Facies succession, stratigraphic occurrence, and paleogeographic context of conglomeratic shorelines within the Falher "C", Spirit River Formation, Deep Basin, west-central Alberta

Abstract: The Falher "C" is a Lower Cretaceous transgressive-regressive sequence that contains mixed coarse-grained sandstone and conglomerate gas reservoirs in the Deep Basin of west-central Alberta. A total of 11 facies were identified in cored intervals of the Falher "C" and are further grouped into five facies associations representative of deposition in an offshoremarine through continental spectrum. Coarse-grained sandstone and conglomerate facies of high reservoir potential comprise facies association two (FA2), … Show more

“…In Section C bioclastic conglomerate and sands deposits have been interpreted as shoreface facies of microtidal, high-energy beaches deposited during the substage MIS 5a. In the coastal setting, polymodal, graded bedding, gently inclined stratified conglomerates with scarce matrix and interbedded layers of laminated bioclastic sands have been described in upper shoreface/foreshore facies (Massari and Parea, 1988;Martini et al, 1995;Armitage et al, 2004) (Fig. 7).…”
