Facile and high-yield synthesis of methyl levulinate from cellulose

Abstract: The production of alkyl levulinates from cellulose was successfully achieved by using a simple and efficient metal salt catalyst, Al2(SO4)3, offering a high yield up to 70.6% under microwave conditions within a short reaction time of 40 minutes.

“…Recently, many reports have been published about oxidation of biomass-derived compounds into value-added platform chemicals (Albonetti et al, 2015;Elliott et al, 2015;Huang et al, 2018;Zhang and Huber, 2018). Figure 5 shows that a wide variety of commodity platform chemicals can be produced from the catalytic oxidation of cellulose or carbohydratederived compounds.…”

“…Cellulose is a feedstock for the production of platform chemicals such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), 1 levulinic acid (LA), levulinic esters or other chemicals, [2][3][4] which could be transformed into more useful chemicals via hydrogenation or other reactions. 5,6 In this process, cellulose firstly hydrolyzes to break down the macrostructure to form glucose monomers or oligomers.…”

“…16 CrCl 2 as a Lewis acid catalyst could facilitate the isomerization of glucose to fructose via a hydride transfer step. 17 Other metal chlorides have also been used for the conversion of carbohydrates, such as ZnCl 2,18 AlCl 3,19 etc. 20,21 Hu et al 22 investigated the use of SnCl 4 for the production of HMF from glucose.…”
