The thermochromism of a polyfluorene derivative complexed with a europium ion was interpreted using the photophysical properties of the noncomplexed polymer and a low molecular mass model compound having the same structure of the complexed site in the polymer. To the naked eye, the thermochromism was characterized by a strong red at low temperatures (170− 260 K, due to Eu 3+ ion) and a blue color at higher ones (280−330 K, due to fluorene). Absorption and emission spectra, time-resolved measurements, and theoretical simulations showed that the polymer chain does not affect the europium photophysical properties, but the opposite occurred: the ion insertion precluded interchain aggregation, and the backbone emission did not vary with temperature variation, in the range of 170−330 K. To the best of our knowledge, this effect is reported for the first time and opened a new avenue for the design of nanothermometers, since the polymer can act as a "built-in standard", thus allowing the construction of much simpler devices.

In this study two salicylidene ligands, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine and N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-4,5-diaminopyrimidine, and their respective aquo-zinc(II) coordination compounds were synthesized. Their characterization was performed by FTIR, proton and carbon NMR, elemental analysis,mass spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Crystal structures of the ligands were determined by monocrystal X-ray diffraction. The photoluminescent properties under photostationary conditions indicate that the ligand emission predominates in both the pristine materials and their zinc(II)complexes. For both ligands, the coordination of a metal atom leads to a redshift of their emission bands in both solvent and solid state. Molecular structures and excitation energies of ligands and complexes were evaluated at DFT level using PBE0/aug-cc-pVDZ. Their ligand and complex electronic transitions can be assigned mainly to the intraligand π→π * type, mainly involving frontier molecular orbitals, with a small participation of the metal. According to our calculations, there is an increasing in the planarity of the ligand structure in the complex, which could explain the redshifting observed in the absorption and emission spectra. The dynamic photoluminescence suggests the occurrence of excited state intramolecular proton transfer from the oxygen to the nitrogen atoms in the coordination site of the sal-4,5-pym.Moreover, they are able to predict the occurrence of the excited state internal proton transfer for the sal-4,5-pym. The dynamic of this proton transfer is demonstrated by both, time resolved emission spectra (TRES) and studies in protic solvent (ethanol).

In this study, the photophysical properties of N-salycilidene-5-chloroaminopyridine were evaluated. This molecule presented dual emission from the keto* and enol* species, depending on the solvent used (DMSO or methanol in the absence and presence of trifluoroacetic acid). This molecule was synthesized through a dehydration reaction of salicylaldehyde under sonication and characterized using FTIR, cyclic voltammetry, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, yielding the molecular structure. Theoretical calculations were performed under the DFT framework and its time-dependent counterpart. Our results suggest the occurrence of excited state proton transfer, ESIPT, in the aprotic solvent, leading to a keto*–enol* balance, which is confirmed by the emission bands observed at 425 and 545 nm, respectively. However, in a protic environment (methanol or DMSO with trifluoroacetic acid), only the enol form is emissive due to the hydrogen bonding between the iminic group and the solvent. Molecules with double emissions are potentially useful for white light emitting diodes.
