Facile Fabrication of Magnetic, Durable and Superhydrophobic Cotton for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Abstract: In this paper, we present a facile and efficient strategy for the fabrication of magnetic, durable, and superhydrophobic cotton for oil/water separation. The superhydrophobic cotton functionalized with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles was prepared via the in situ coprecipitation of Fe2+/Fe3+ ions under ammonia solution on cotton fabrics using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a coupling agent and hydrophobic treatment with tridecafluorooctyl triethoxysilane (FAS) in sequence. The as-prepared cotton demonstrated excell… Show more

“…In Figure 3 a, the broad XPS spectrum of the PES/CO fabric shows two peaks with binding energies at 532.5 and 284.7 eV corresponding to oxygen (O1s) and carbon (C1s), respectively, attributed to cotton and polyester fibers [ 41 , 42 ]. The binding energy around 932 eV is assigned to the photoelectron peak of copper (Cu 2p) [ 43 ].…”

“…Chen et al (2020) developed hydrophobicoleophilic cotton fabric by treating the surface of the cotton with silica nanoparticles and the water contact angle of the modified cotton was 140°. Yu et al (2019) prepared the magnetic, durable and superhydrophobic cotton fabric for the removal of oil from water. The functionalized cotton fabric with Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles was prepared via in situ coprecipitation of Fe 2þ/ Fe 3þ ions under ammonia solution with a coupling agent, Oil spill cleanup by natural fibers polyvinylpyrrolidone and hydrophobic treatment using tridecafluorooctyltriethoxysilane.…”

“…The rst one is uorine-contained materials. Typically, trideca uorooctyl triethoxysilane (FAS) grafted cotton shows superhydrophobicity as well as nice oil absorption capacity [Yu et al 2019]. But the most serious drawback is that uorine-contained materials are environmental unfriendly and di cult degradable, which will hinder their further application.…”
