Facile Preparation of Uniform Nanocomposite Spheres with Loading Silver Nanoparticles on Polystyrene-methyl Acrylic Acid Spheres for Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Abstract: A simple, mild and green route is developed for the preparation of uniform polystyrene-methyl acrylic acid/ silver (PSMAA/Ag) nanocomposite spheres with high catalytic activities. In this approach, monodisperse polystyrene-methyl acrylic acid (PSMAA) spheres are used as polymeric matrixes; silver precursor-[Ag(NH 3 ) 2 ] + ions are then adsorbed onto the surfaces of PSMAA spheres due to the strong electrostatic attraction between carboxyl groups (electronegative) and [Ag(NH 3 ) 2 ] + ions (electropositive). “…Therefore, the XRD patterns of the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 ‐ Ag nanostructures preserve the (111), (220), (311), (400), (422), (511), (440) and (533) crystal plans of the typical Fe 3 O 4 spinel structure (Figure ). Besides, they contain the mainly characteristic (111), (200), (220) and (311) reflections of the Ag cubic phase (ICDD/PDF 01–1167), confirming the decoration of the Fe 3 O 4 with Ag nanoparticles . The oxidation of the magnetite to hematite in oxygen atmosphere at 800 °C, the XRD pattern shows the presence of (012), (104), (110), (113), (024), (116), (214) and (300) reflections of the rhombohedral structure of the α‐Fe 2 O 3 phase (ICDD/PDF 01–079‐0007), indicating the formation of high crystallinity hematite product.…”

“…The particles can be further modified to provide new properties to these materials. One modifica- tion is the incorporation of metal nanoparticles into the polymer beads [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. The resulting composites exhibit a double function, they support the metal nanoparticles and prevent their aggregation.…”

“…Also, Kästner and Thünemann employed AgNP and AgNP modified with glutathione and bovine serum albumin for the same purpose. Silver is widely used and many other papers reported the use of AgNP as the most promisor catalyst for the reduction of 4‐NP . Additionally, the cost for the AgNPs manufacture is very attractive.…”
