Facile Synthesis, Large Optical Nonlinearity, and Excellent Thermal Stability of Hyperbranched Poly(aryleneethynylene)s Containing Azobenzene Chromophores

Abstract: Azo-functionalized hyperbranched poly(aryleneethynylene)s (hb-PAEs) (4 and 5) are synthesized by palladium-catalyzed coupling of triiodoarenes (1 and 2) with a diethynylazobenzene (3). The hb-PAEs are soluble, film-forming, and morphologically stable (T g > 180 °C). Their poled films exhibit high second-harmonic-generation coefficients (d 33 up to 177 pm/V) thanks to the chromophore-separation and site-isolation effects of hyperbranched architectural structure of the polymers in the three-dimensional space. Th… Show more

“…[12] Dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) have received much attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties. [13] Generally, HBPs are prepared by one-step polymerization in contrast to dendrimers prepared by multi-step reactions. So, HBPs are suitable for large-scale production and wide applications.…”

“…The high tolerance of the cross-coupling reactions to a wide variety of functional groups also enabled us to synthesize functionalized hyperbranched polymers that contain nitro and azo moieties. [9] These previous successes in the polymer functionalization prompted us to explore the possibility of utilizing this coupling methodology for silole functionalization. We thus searched for stable yet reactive silole intermediates.…”
