Facile synthesis of luminescent carbon dots from mangosteen peel by pyrolysis method

Abstract: Carbon dots (C-Dots) from mangosteen peel has been synthesized by pyrolysis method. Synthesis of C-Dots is done using precursor solution which is prepared from extract of mangosteen peel as carbon source and urea as passivation agent. C-Dots is successfully formed with absorbance spectra at wavelength 350-550 nm. Urea affects to the formed C-Dots, while the absorbance and the luminescent spectra are independent toward urea. C-Dots from extract of mangosteen peel has size in range *2-15 nm. The absorbance peaks… Show more

“…Recently, lemon juice-NCDs were prepared and investigated by Hoan et al for potential applications in bioimaging and optoelectronics [ 14 ]. There are numerous other naturally occurring raw materials which have been employed for the preparation of NCDs such as carrot roots [ 15 ], egg yolk oil [ 16 ], chitosan [ 17 ] sucrose [ 18 ], raw cashew gum [ 19 ], lotus root [ 20 ], konjac flour [ 21 ],curcumin [ 22 ], mangosteen peel [ 23 ],N-acetyl- l -cysteine [ 24 ]. In addition, researchers are also focusing on recycling biomass wastes because of the alarming effects of the environment.…”

“…In addition to lemon peel, there are numerous studies which used fruit byproducts as starting materials, such as preparation of CQDs from mangosteen peel (Aji, Susanto, Wiguna, & Sulhadi, 2017), pineapple peel (Vandarkuzhali, et al, 2018) and grapefruit peel (Xiao, et al, 2018). JJ Zhou, et al published the synthesis of CQDs using watermelon peel.…”

“…Temperature also is known to influence the structure of carbon chains and C‐N configuration of the CDs thus formed. The compositions of as‐prepared C‐dots are C (32.7 %), N (48.1 %), and O (19.2 %) 212. Pyrolysis at high temperature and oxygenolyzis using concentrated acid treatment are employed to prepare CQDs from mango peel.…”
