“…Factors influencing PHSI appear to arise from perspectives centered on the society, family, and the individual. Socially, the accessibility and availability of mental health services ( 8 , 22 ), the type of care provided by the mental health service ( 23 ), social environments, such as a neighborhood context ( 24 ), school settings ( 22 ), and health insurance policy covering mental illness ( 25 ), are common factors related to PHSI. Family factors had a limited focus in research.…”

“…MHL was defined as “ knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders which aid their recognition, management, or prevention .” It includes the knowledge of ways of preventing mental disorders, strategies of effective self-help for minor problems, recognition of the illness development, help-seeking options, and first aid skills to assist others who are in risk of mental disorder ( 43 ). People with poorer MHL, such as lack of knowledge about mental illness and low recognition of mental health symptoms, were less likely to seek formal help for depressive symptoms ( 22 , 44 ). A survey showed that 60% of the participants agreed that their delayed help seeking was caused by a lack of knowledge about mental health problems.…”

“…In other words, adolescent depression-literacy must improve as a precondition for the success, in terms of uptake, of available intervention strategies. This is because poor depressionliteracy, whereby depressive symptoms were interpreted as normal inconveniences of puberty or a personality trait, has been identified as one of the potential barriers to help-seeking among depressed adolescents [19]. Furthermore, there is preliminary evidence, from around the world, that school-based mental health awareness programs which targets the provisioning of accurate information about the nature of and services for mental health conditions to parents, teachers, and students, can and does lead to improved symptom recognition and uptake of mental-health services among school children [20][21][22].…”
