Facilitation of Conspecific Seedling Recruitment and Shifts in Temperate Savanna Ecotones

Abstract: In contrast to documented increases in woody plant dominance of savannas and grasslands of North America, oak (Quercus L.) savannas that form lower tree lines in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico have been stable over the last several centuries. We sought to identify potential biotic and abiotic constraints on seedling recruitment of Quercus emoryi within the context of potential shifts in lower tree line. We used field surveys to describe seedling distribution at and below lower tree line… Show more

“…Dependence of seedlings on shade is common in many natural ecosystems Plant Ecol (2007) 191:33-45 41 (Callaway 1995;Pugnaire et al 1996;Weltzin and McPherson 1999), yet it is important to realize that it also affects tropical treelines, because this intolerance to radiation can influence treeline dynamics and spatial patterns (Kupfer and Cairns 1996;Slayter and Noble 1992). It can for instance be one of the reasons why the treeline in this area is so stable, even though the potential climatic treeline may lie at a higher altitude.…”

“…Positive intraspecific interactions have been documented in a wide range of communities (see Wilson & Agnew 1992;Petraitis & Latham 1999;Weltzin & McPherson 1999;Catovsky & Bazzaz 2000). Priority effects are commonly Proc.…”

“…Seed dispersal and seedling establishment represent a major bottleneck in woody plant population dynamics (García, 2001;Rey and Alcántara, 2000), especially in arid and semiarid environments (Chambers, 2001;Gómez-Aparicio et al, 2005;Weltzin and McPherson, 1999). Study of spatial distributions of recruits in relation to seed sources and to abiotic and biotic factors has been a productive field of research in Mediterranean ecosystems over the past decade (Kollmann, 2000;Montesinos et al, 2007).…”
