Facilitation of sociomoral reasoning in delinquents.

Abstract: An intervention involving 60 incarcerated juvenile delinquents (30 male and 30 female) yielded significant gains in sociomoral reasoning that were attributable to a dilemma-discussions treatment. The treatment consisted of eight weekly smallgroup discussions of sociomoral dilemmas. The group participants initially differed in both sociomoral stage and dilemma opinion. “…Inadvertently, this provides a theoretical rationale for providing group-based interventions within forensic settings, since they provide more opportunities for perspective-taking than individual treatment. Group-based interventions for anti-social young people that focus solely on enhancing moral reasoning appear to be successful, but they do not have the desired impact on conduct (Arbuthnot & Gordon, 1986;Gibbs, Arnold, Alhborn, & Cheesman, 1984;Gibbs, Potter, & Goldstein, 1995;Niles, 1986). Theoretically, this may be because moral reasoning can be construed as distal schema within the context of a social situation, while cognitive distortions and social skills are proximal.…”
