Facilitators and barriers influencing the readiness to receive dental implants in a geriatric institutionalised population—A randomized non‐invasive interventional study

Abstract: Providing an adequate education about benefits and risks of receiving dental implants does not change the attitude towards dental implants. The source of information/messenger does influence attitudes towards implants. If the person delivering the education and information is a relative or a known medical person, the person's attitude is more likely to change as compared to people receiving the information from an unrelated person.

“…10 The restricted demand for implants suggests that many older patients are able to accept the limitations of their conventional dentures and feel psychologically satisfied with their oral condition, which helps to explain the lack of interest in receiving dental implants. 15 The financial costs of implant therapy are recognised as a major barrier to accessing treatment. However, previous studies have suggested that even when financial cost factor is removed, the refusal rate remains high.…”

“…It had been suggested that only a small proportion of edentulous patients proceed with the placement of implants to retain a mandibular overdenture 10 . The restricted demand for implants suggests that many older patients are able to accept the limitations of their conventional dentures and feel psychologically satisfied with their oral condition, which helps to explain the lack of interest in receiving dental implants 15 …”

“…The search for less complex and less costly treatments is an important issue in implant dentistry, since the incremental cost of implant treatments compared to conventional treatments remains a recognised barrier to the delivery of implant‐supported dental prostheses 1 . Especially for geriatric patients, fear of surgery and pain, old age and high costs negatively influence their attitudes towards implant treatment 1‐3 . Hence, strategies to improve patient access to the benefits of dental implants may include appropriate shared decisions between patients and professionals regarding the most suitable treatment option for the individual patient considering the invasiveness of treatment, potential risk of complications and costs.…”
