Facilities management domain review: potential contributions towards digitisation

Abstract: Digitalisation within the facilities management (FM) sector has great potential to positively impact the environmental performance of the architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO) industry. Currently, the domain suffers from poor data integration with other disciplines and earlier life-cycle phases. Though solutions which address the interoperability issue are replete in the literature, there remains no comprehensive alignment. This domain review paper synthesises the key literature around … Show more

“…Based on previously defined and measurable key performance indicators, KPIs are presented (10) to obtain continuous operational insights in this loop, to support people in making decisions, and thus, control the facility services and integrated services (11). Decisions made based on measured values lead to corrective actuation (12), i.e., trigger events that occur in the operation of a building which controls equipment, trigger actuators, etc.…”

“…BIM is commonly applied in capital delivery: planning, design and construction phases, but is not used effectively [8] over the whole lifecycle, especially in the operations phase where the Facility Management (FM) falls. Data is not only incompletely available or inaccurate; thus, it is not beneficial [9] in achieving core business service outcomes as there is no comprehensive alignment of information between the built asset integrating the facility, people and core processes [10]. Although international standardisation exists for structuring, providing, and processing construction data, a lack of data alignment may be one factor for the construction industry's low efficiency and effectiveness compared to other industries.…”

“…Both Ashworth (2020) and Shaw et al (2021) describe the emergent and under-defined nature of the FM domain. It is in this complex domain that considering the priorities of practitioners in planning development initiatives is particularly important due to its bottomup and industry-led nature (McArthur and Bortoluzzi, 2018).…”

“…In line with this, leadership is required to provide and create great value in producing results in terms of procedures, knowledge, and innovation (Shaw et al, 2021). Academic administrators must possess the right effective skills, such as learning skills, literacy, and life skills, which are also called the "transversal," "transferable," and "soft" skills or competencies, to create the change necessary for the institution which people can also follow, as it ensures education system that goes beyond cognitive domain to improve learning outcomes (Vivekanandan & Louis, 2020).…”
