Factor structure of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) in Brazil: convergent validation of the Brazilian version

Abstract: Objectives: The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was developed to assess the symptoms of schizophrenia dimensionally. Although it is widely used in clinical trials in Brazil, it is not fully validated. The aim of this study is to assess the factor structure of the Brazilian PANSS and generate validation data for its current version. Methods: A total of 292 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were enrolled. Results: Principal component analysis suggested a forced five-factor final model that accou… Show more

“…With the PRSs calculated for the case-control comparison, we used a generalized linear model to test PRS associations assuming a Poisson distribution (Poisson regression), which is more suitable for ordinal variables (such as psychiatric scales), using clinical traits as the dependent variable and the best p -threshold PRS with the first four principal components as the independent variables and covariates. As clinical outcome variables, we considered, for both time points, GAF score, total CGI score, total PANSS scores and the five PANSS dimension clusters suggested by Wallwork et al 20 and validated by Higuchi et al 21 in the Brazilian population. GAF values were transformed to negative values (−GAF), so all clinical variables were easily compared, with high values meaning high symptomatology.…”

“…1). A non-parametric correlation to ACE enzymatic activity showed no significant correlation for any dimension (data not shown) in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) for a Brazilian sample (Higuchi et al, 2014). We also looked for relation to severity using Clinical Global Impression (CGI) and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) values, and no significant correlation to ACE activity was found.…”

The patients were also evaluated with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) 28 , Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) 29 , Clinical Global Impression, (CGI) 30 , and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) 31 . The patients were being treated with atypical antipsychotics, and medication dosages were stable for at least 4 weeks prior to cognitive assessment.…”
