Objective: Describe the quality of life of elderly informal workers in an intermediate Colombian city. Method: A descriptive study of 320 randomly selected informal workers aged older than 18 from Manizales was performed. A sub-sample of 153 people aged older than 50, representing 47.8 percent of the study population, was performed. Two instruments were applied: one testing demographic variables and the WHOQOL-BREF quality of life questionnaire. Univariate and bivariate analyzes were performed using frequency distributions and the chi-squared test was used to identify association between variables. Results: 69.9% of the participants were men, the average age was 59.4 (+7.2) years, 62.0% had no or basic education, 52.0% belonged to social class 1 and 2; 6.5% had no affiliation with the health and social security system. The different dimensions of quality of life were perceived favorably, as was health. More than 50.0% were autonomous, had strong social and family networks, had not experienced negative feelings and found meaning to life. Statistical differences ( p<0.05) by gender and age were found for environment, sex life, daily living skills, and satisfaction with work capacity. Conclusion: The quality of life of older informal workers is well perceived and is related to a positive assessment of health. From the perspective of human development, work gives meaning to the lives of older people and encourages active, healthy and productive aging.

Validity and reliability of the SF-36 in Chilean older adults: the ALEXANDROS study

To validate short-form-36 health survey (SF-36) with specific scoring algorithm obtained in a large sample of Chilean older people and to associate quality of life in this sample with social and health related factors. A cross-sectional study on 2,143 community-living subjects aged 60-92 years (33 % men and 67 % women) conducted in Santiago, Chile. Scores in 8 scales of SF-36-physical function (PF), role physical (RP), bodily pain (BP), general health (GH), vitality (VT), social functioning (SF), role emotional (RE) and mental health (MH)-, were calculated. Factor analysis was used to extract two principal factors and logistic regression model was applied to estimate its association with socio-demographic and health variables. The internal consistency of scales was high (Cronbach's alpha 0.86-0.87). Factor analysis retained two factors: mental (MCS) and physical (PCS) components accounting for 65.3 % of total variance (55.3 and 10.0 % respectively). High correlations (0.61-0.94) between MCS and MH, V, RE and SF were obtained. PCS correlated highest (0.72-0.86) with RP, PF and BP. Self-perceived symptoms of depression (GDS-15 C5) was the main variable explaining low scores in both MCS and PCS (adjusted OR = 26.9; 95 % CI: 15.3-47.2; OR = 3.4; 95 % CI: 2.1-5.5, respectively). We have demonstrated the reliability and validity of SF-36 questionnaire to evaluate health related quality of life, reporting Chilean-Specific factor score coefficients for MCS and PCS based in national Chilean means and standard deviations for older people. After adjusting by age and gender, the main predictors of low health related QoL in Chilean older people were selfperceived symptoms of depression, the presence of two or more chronic diseases and illiteracy. Important gender inequalities were observed in all of these results, being consistently less favorable in women than in men.

This is a quantitative and transactional study, with a sample of 777 (488 women and 289 men) elderly people that live in the North end of Chile. The results show differences in the aging process between women and men. In objective terms, men age better in their physical and mental health and economic security, whereas women obtained better results on subjective or satisfaction aspects related to the various fields of quality of life. The practical applications are discussed starting from those results.Keywords: Aging, gender, health issues, dependence, quality of life Diferenças de gênero na saúde e qualidade de vida em idosos no norte do ChileResumo: O envelhecimento é um processo individual e, portanto, particular para cada pessoa que avança além dos 60 anos, um dos principais critérios de diferenciação do processo de envelhecimento é o gênero. Nesta linha, o objetivo desta pesquisa é conhecer as diferenças de bem-estar, associadas às condições de dependência da saúde física e problemas de saúde e qualidade de vida, dependendo da variável gênero. É um estudo quantitativo e transacional, com uma amostra de 777 (488 mulheres e 289 homens) idosos que vivem no extremo norte do Chile. Os resultados diferem no processo de envelhecimento entre mulheres e homens. Em termos objetivos, os homens envelhecem melhor em sua saúde física e saúde mental e segurança econômica e, ao contrário, as mulheres obtêm melhores resultados nos aspectos subjetivos dos diferentes domínios da qualidade de vida.
