Factorial and Diagnostic Validity of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) in Croatian Primary Health Care

Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the factorial and diagnostic validity of the Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition (BDI-II) in Croatian primary health care. Data were collected using a medical outpatient sample (N = 314). Reliability measured by internal consistency proved to be high. While the Velicer MAP Test showed that extraction of only one factor is satisfactory, confirmatory factor analysis indicated the best fit for a 3-factor structure model consisting of cognitive, affective and somatic dimen… Show more

“…The BDI has undergone two major revisions: in 1978 as the BDI-IA and in 1996 as the BDI-II 115. In recent years, many attempts have been made to examine the psychometric properties of the BDI-II; however, these studies focused mostly on data from adult populations,16171819 and a limited number of reliability and validity studies of the BDI-II have been conducted in adolescents, either outpatients or inpatients 2021…”

“…The BDI‐II is a 21‐item questionnaire consistent with DSM criteria for depression, and has been widely used to assess the severity of depression (Smarr & Keefer, ). Given that the BDI‐II has diagnostic validity (Jakšić, Ivezić, Jokić‐Begić, Surányi, & Stojanović‐Špehar, ), and was used by Indig et al () as diagnostic tool, it was included in this review. Indig et al applied the BDI‐II to a sample of incarcerated people (both Indigenous and non‐Indigenous Australians) to determine levels of depression; as in the other studies, there was no mention made of attempts to validate this measure for Indigenous Australians.…”
