Factors Affecting African American Counselors' Job Satisfaction: A National Survey

Abstract: Although there are many job satisfaction studies, research related to the job satisfaction of African American counselors (AACs) is negligible. The purpose of this study was to investigate the job satisfaction of AACs. A total of 182 employed AACs who were members of the American Counseling Association (ACA) completed a modified Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire and a data information form. Results indicated that 87% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with their current job.

“…Students did express positive experiences as well, such as support received by peers, friends, family, and faculty (Baker & Moore, 2015). These studies and others like it noticed the negative experiences of African American counselor education students and the lack of available research on the topic (Baker & Moore, 2015;Day-Vines, & Holcomb-McCoy, 2007;Henfield et al, 2013;Jones et al, 2009;Schneider et al, 2009). This study seeks to address the need for counselor education programs to address the unique training needs of African-American counselor-in-training in group counseling coursework and experiences.…”

“…African American counselor-in-training (AACIT) experiences and training in counseling education programs is a relatively new area of research. According to Jones et al (2009), until the late 1970s, mental health professionals were not included in a majority of study, including job satisfaction. As a result, research on professionals in the mental health field was lacking; research on African American professionals and professionals-in-training in the area was almost non-existent (Jones et al, 2009).…”

“…Spector defined job satisfaction as a cluster to measure and evaluate an individuals' feeling toward his job (Spector, 1997). It is closely related to the need of fulfillment as it measures how well an occupation satisfies ones' needs and thus reversely created a form of motivation (Jones, 2005;Spector, 1997). The definition of job satisfaction has also been extended to the essence of pleasurable or positive feeling towards the task, job achievement and job experiences (Worell, 2004).…”
