Contract farming (CF) as a sustainable practice has expanded rapidly, bringing numerous benefits to both the agribusiness industry and farmers, as well as the broader economy; CF is also considered a vehicle to tackle the challenges in sustainable development due to the serious effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little attention has been paid to CF schemes in Greece. To address this evidence gap, the current study aimed to outline the socioeconomic profile of Greek farmers and how it is related to their perspective on CF in the post-COVID era. Primary data were collected in the agricultural area of central Greece, Thessaly, with a structured questionnaire containing three sections: demographics, awareness of the CF concept, and farmers’ perceptions toward CF. The results indicate that 60.7% of the respondents are unaware of CF. Demographic and economic variables such as gender, years of experience, and income impact Greek farmers’ attitude toward CF. In addition, factor analysis results reveal that economic benefits and social, technological, and environmental challenges and risks are associated with CF. We suggest that researchers and policymakers interested in the development of CF in Greece should consider the heterogeneity of the agricultural workforce for the development and successful implementation of policies related to CF. Educational programs towards increasing farmers’ awareness and sufficient understanding of the practical issues of CF are also required.

Penyelenggaraan penyuluhan pertanian belum cukup optimal, sehingga belum mampu mewujutkan sumber daya manusia pertanian yang profesional, kreatif, inovatif, dan berwawasan global. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor penghambat kelompok tani di Kabupaten Manokwari Papua Barat. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan Teknik analisis data pengamatan langsung (participant observation) dan forum group discussion. Data yang telah dikumpulkan dianalisis secara deskritif dan ditampilkan secara tabel (tabulasi), dengan perhitungan frekuensi dan rataan skor. Hasil penelitian menerangkan bahwa Kemampuan kelompok dalam pemanfaatan sumber daya dan pelestarian lingkungan belum mencapai hasil yang maksimal, hal ini menyebabkan pengetahuan petani rendah. Keaktifan penyuluh dalam memberikan bimbingan kepada petani masih terlihat sangat kurang, disebabkan terbatasnya jumlah tenaga penyuluh dan luasnya wilayah kerja serta jumlah kelompoktani banyak, waktunya terbatas. Kemampuan kelompok dalam bekerjasama dengan mitra usaha yang mendukung kegiatan usaha tani baik dibidang sarana produksi, pengolahan, pemasaran dan permodalan.

Climate change (CC) increases the frequency of flood and drought and is a significant threat to smallholder rice farming in Indonesia. Adapting to these changes is crucial to minimize the damages to the Indonesian food system. Accordingly, the Indonesian government has formulated National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) to mitigate the effect of climate change on priority sectors, including rice farming. To this end, the Indonesian government included climate change adaptation into the National Development Plan (2019–2024). Selecting the appropriate beneficiaries of this program is crucial to improve the efficacy of Indonesian climate policy. In the case of rice farming, farmers with a high probability to adapt are the appropriate beneficiaries of this program. Thus, this chapter aimed to identify the characteristics of Indonesian smallholder rice farmers with a high probability to adapt to climate change. To this end, this chapter used the findings of the study on 87,330 rice farmers in Indonesia. Education, gender, land tenure security, presence of irrigation infrastructure, application of chemical fertilizer, cropping system, access to extension services, and participation in farmer group are significant determinants of adaptation practices. The finding suggests that prioritizing farmers based on these characteristics are crucial to improve the efficacy of climate policy.
