Factors Affecting Motivation to Transfer Training

Abstract: This study examines the relationship of motivation to transfer skills and knowledge learned in a computer-based training programme with five groups of variables: individual or general attitudes, situational specific attitudes, reactions, learning, and work environment factors. Hierarchical regression analysis produced a model which explained 60.5% of the variance in motivation to transfer. Individual attitudes and environmental variables explained most of the variance in motivation. A number of mediated relati… Show more

“…Training motivation spurs transfer motivation. Motivation to transfer according to Seyler et al, (1998) is an intended effort towards utilizing the skills and knowledge acquired from a training atmosphere to real work situation. Nikandrou et al (2009) found that the person who intrinsically makes the decision to participate in a training program is an important factor in the training transfer process.…”

“…While individual attitudes that a trainee brings may not be directly related to the training programme, they are however, expected to influence both motivation to learn and motivation to transfer. This therefore, suggests that those individuals who enjoy learning new things are bound to be more motivated to attend and participate in training and practise what they would have learnt (Seyler, Holton III, Bates, Burnett & Carvalho, 1998).…”

“…Therefore, researchers have been interested in the determinants of employees' motivation to transfer training from the classroom to real work (Facteau, Dobbins, Russell, Ladd, & Kudisch, 1995;Seyler, Holton III, Bates, Burnett, & Carvalho, 1998). In a meta-analytic study, Taylor, Russ-Eft, and Chan (2005) found that when training transfer is included in performance reviews, employees' have significantly higher motivation to apply what they learned.…”
