Factors affecting the adoption of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other converged IP services in South Africa

Abstract: The authors embarked on this study to investigate factors likely to impact on the adoption of VoIP and other converged Internet protocol (IP) services in the SA market. The intention of this study was to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive understanding of the forces shaping the market, in order to help industry participants and new entrants position themselves correctly. This is achieved by evaluating technology adoption and diffusion models, in particular Moore’s chasm model, which highlights the reasons … Show more

“…Technology characteristics, such as complexity and relative risk and advantage, affect technology adoption in LDCs just as they do in developed countries (Batz et al, 1999;Tobin and Bidoli, 2006;Sohal et al, 2001;Brown et al, 2003;Abd Rahman and Bennett, 2009). However, some comparative studies have shown that there are other factors that are unique to LDCs that may affect technology adoption and diffusion practices (Hasan and Ditsa, 1999;Irwin et al, 2004;Salaheldin, 2007).…”

“…For instance, Bouwman and Van de Wijngaert (2009) argue that the intention to use mobile services is dependent on the situational context. With regard to mobile communication and specifically mobile VoIP services, Tobin and Bidoli (2006) found service cost, security, QoS, complexity and privacy are the most important independent variables which will affect the adoption of VoIP and other converged IP services. VoIP services have been speculated as potential disruptive services by Verkasalo (2006).…”

“…Hardware, software, network services, and service agreements have been identified as factors affecting comfort with mobile phones [42]. Tobin and Bidoli [54] list the following as key factors in holding back adoption: high bandwidth cost, regulatory uncertainty, market uncertainty, and quality of service concerns.…”
