Factors affecting the pre-filling probability of water storage tanks

Abstract: Water Storage tanks have proved to be effective for runoff control in drainage systems. Standard design procedures follow an event-based approach: a single flood at a time is considered and tank is assumed completely empty at the beginning of its filling. The possibility of pre-filling from previous events is then neglected and underestimation of storage volume can occur. In this paper an analytical probabilistic approach to estimate the probability of pre-filling is presented and effects due to outflow rate a… Show more

“…In particular, the authors [12][13][14], have deeply investigated the problem of pre-filling of the storage capacity from previous rainfall events and its relation with control variables and management rules of releases. Pre-filling volumes from previous rainfall events high increase the probability of spills into receiving waters, whose limitation is one of the main targets in the modelling of stormwater detention facilities.…”

“…However, its use would involve a considerable complication in the integration of the expressions for the estimation of pre-filling probability. Becciu and Raimondi (2012) assumed a double-exponential distribution that better fitted the frequency distribution of the observed data for rainfall depth and interevent time, maintaining the exponential distribution for rainfall duration. The double-exponential distribution may be easily integrated but derived expressions are more complex.…”

“…Pre-filling from previous events is then neglected and underestimation of the needed storage may occur or, which is the same, the return period assumed in design is overestimated especially for low outflow rates and some management rules (Becciu and Raimondi 2012).…”
