Poor biological attachment of artificial reef (AR) prepared by the recycled aggregate limit the application in the area of marine engineering. In this study, the waste oyster shell (WOS) was used as raw materials to prepare the recycled aggregate porous concrete (RAPC), the compressive strength, split tensile strength, chloride penetration resistance, freezing-thawing resistance, low temperature resistance, and the biological attachment were tested, aiming to improve the biological attachment and decrease carbon dioxide emission. The experiment results demonstrate that the use of WOS can decrease the compressive and split tensile strength, but the effect of designed porous structure on the mechanical strength is higher than that of WOS. To ensure the durability of RAPC, the contents of WOS should not exceed 20%. Additionally, the addition of WOS and designed porous structure are beneficial to biological attachment. However, the porous structure of RAPC only improves biological attachment in the short term, and the reverse phenomenon is true in the long term. As the partial replacement of cement with WOS is 40%, the total carbon dioxide emission decreases by about 52%. In conclusion, the use of WOS in the RAPC is an eco-friendly method in the artificial reef (AR) with improved ecological attachment and reduced carbon dioxide emission.

Development of robust concrete mixes with a lower environmental impact is challenging due to natural variability in constituent materials and a multitude of possible combinations of mix proportions. Making reliable property predictions with machine learning can facilitate performance-based specification of concrete, reducing material inefficiencies and improving the sustainability of concrete construction. In this work, we develop a machine learning algorithm that can utilize intermediate target variables and their associated noise to predict the final target variable. We apply the methodology to specify a concrete mix that has high resistance to carbonation, and another concrete mix that has low environmental impact. Both mixes also fulfill targets on the strength, density, and cost. The specified mixes are experimentally validated against their predictions. Our generic methodology enables the exploitation of noise in machine learning, which has a broad range of applications in structural engineering and beyond.

The main purpose of this study is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of the Kömürhan bridge, built with natural aggregate concrete in Elazig, in terms of mechanical, environmental, and economic properties if certain ratios of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) were used. For this purpose, a detailed laboratory study was designed, and concrete samples were produced, all‐natural, all‐recycled, and both recycled and containing natural aggregates. Different water‐to‐cement, aggregate‐to‐cement, and recycled concrete aggregate‐to‐total aggregate ratios were considered for the mixture designs of these samples, and the fresh and hardened concrete properties of these samples were determined. Then, statistical analyses were made using the response surface method, and numerical models were developed to predict the fresh and hardened concrete properties with high accuracy. Mixtures containing RCA, which have the same fresh and hardened concrete properties as the fresh and hardened concrete properties of the Kömürhan bridge, which was selected as an example structure by using these models, were determined for optimization purposes. A detailed environmental and economic comparison of the optimization and reference mixtures was made. While making environmental assessments, energy consumption, global warming potential, waste generation, and abiotic depletion were considered. It was seen that the optimization mixtures were more economical and more environmentally friendly than the reference mixture. As a result of this study, it was predicted that the use of RCA in buildings constructed using large amounts of concrete could provide significant environmental and economic advantages and was exemplified by the Kömürhan bridge.
