SUMMARY Native American fishers are concerned about the deteriorating quality of salmon and other fish caught from the Columbia River. In 1991, the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), with the assistance of the Yakama Indian Nation 0, initiated a study to monitor the salmon and steelhead (Oncorhynchus spp.) fishery in the lower Columbia River (Zone 6 fishery). A tribal student from the YIN worked with PNL staff during August and September of 1991 and 1992, and 2 fishery technicians from the YIN were hired to monitor the fishery in 1993. Fish collected during the project were examined by fisheries pathologists at the Lower Columbia River Fish Health Center, operated by the U.S.
