Factors affecting transient response of grounding grid systems

Abstract: Grounding system behavior under transient condition is investigated. TransIVission line approach has been chosen to simulate the buried grounding system under lightning condition. Different models of buried grounding grids have been studied under lightning conditions. Sensitivity analysis of soil parameters and grounding grid dimensions have been studied to understand the effect of each parameter on the performance of grounding systems subjected to lightning.

“…For the optimal design of grounding grid system, the optimal compression ratio (OCR) could be determined, in which the touch voltage reaches its minimum if the grounding grid is designed using this compression ratio [10]. An empirical expression is suggested to calculate OCR as follows [810] OCR=a0+a1expfalse(0.0001hfalse)+a2expfalse(bhfalse) where b=0.35039.6311exp)(0.03666L a0=a01+a02k+a03k2 a1=a11+a12k+a13k2 a2=a21+a22k where k is the number of segments of the conductor in any direction; and h is the grid laying depth. The relationship between a 0 , a 1 … and L is given in Table 1 [10–12].…”

“…To maximize the efficiency of a grounding system, one critical aspect that demands attention is grounding impedance, as underscored by Azmi et al [2]. Furthermore, Gouda et al [3] conducted an extensive investigation into the number and arrangement of soil layers, layer thickness, and the reflection factor between these layers. These factors significantly influence the total ground resistance of grounding systems.…”
