Factors Associated with Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet among Adolescents Living in Sicily, Southern Italy

Abstract: The present study aimed to examine the factors associated with increased Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence among a sample of Italian adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 1135 students (13–16 years) attending 13 secondary schools of Sicily, southern Italy. “…MD adherence in our sample was similar to that found in other Mediterranean countries, such as Greece [43], Italy [46] and Turkey [33]. However, compared to the Spanish sample studied by SerraMajem et al [10], the proportion of adolescents in our sample who had low MD adherence was higher (16% vs. 4%), while the proportion of those with high MD adherence was lower (26% vs. 46%).…”

“…In practical terms, a 0·5-unit increase in KIDMED may correspond roughly to half a fruit or a portion of vegetables per day, or half a portion of dairy product for breakfast, or a portion of cheese/yoghurt per day. There is previous research supporting the association between socio-economic status, assessed through family income and/or parental level of education and occupation, and dietary intake in terms of nutrient adequacy and food group intake (29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34)(35) . We advanced this knowledge by extending associations to the whole diet and diet quality, using the perspective of a priori defined dietary patterns (36) .…”

“…The phenomenon may assume an important dimension in countries characterized by a large diffusion of the Mediterranean Diet, especially in Sicily, where a significant deviation from the Mediterranean dietary habits (and associated health benefits) among adolescents, younger, and less educated people has been well documented (23,24).…”
