Factors associated with catch‐up growth in early infancy in rural Pakistan: A longitudinal analysis of the women's work and nutrition study

Abstract: The adverse health impacts of early infant stunting can be partially ameliorated by early catch‐up growth. Few studies have examined predictors of and barriers to catch‐up growth to identify intervention points for improving linear growth during infancy. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of, and factors associated with, catch‐up growth among infants in Pakistan. A longitudinal study of mother–infant dyads ( n = 1,161) was conducted in rural Sindh province, with enrolment betwee… Show more

“…Of the 58 observational studies included in the systematic review, eight (13.8%) were conducted in countries involved in a civil war [ 15 , 29 , 30 , 39 , 40 , 45 , 50 , 61 ], 42 (72.4%) were reported from both urban and rural areas, 8 (13.8%) were conducted in urban areas only [ 14 , 24 , 26 , 35 , 36 , 53 , 62 , 67 ], and 8 (13.8%) in rural areas only [ 18 , 32 , 37 , 39 , 42 , 43 , 66 , 70 ]. Also, 7 (12.1%) studies involved refugees [ 15 , 16 , 20 , 22 , 27 , 34 , 65 ].…”

“…We also created the binary variables 'Ever had acute malnutrition and 'Ever had an episode of accelerated linear growth' to distinguish those who experienced the condition at any data collection point. Accelerated linear growth was defined using the cut-off proposed in the literature of +0.67 HAZ increase between two data collection points [30][31][32]. Based on this cut-off, a child who had an HAZd 0.67 was considered as having experienced an accelerated linear growth [30].…”

“…Both HAZ and HAD were used to characterize linear growth better. Based on the literature, accelerated linear growth (ALG) was diagnosed when HAZ increased by ≥0.67 between two assessments [ 23 26 ]. The covariant for outcome of wasting and morbidity was assessed by fitting mixed-effects models to include independent variables as covariates.…”
