Factors Associated with Frequency of Peanut Consumption in Korea: A National Population-Based Study

Abstract: Household peanut exposure via skin in infants with impaired skin barrier function is a risk factor for peanut allergy development. The aim of this study is to investigate the peanut consumption of Koreans using national representative data. We used data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2012–2016, consisting of data from 17,625 adults who complete the survey. Peanut intake was assessed using a 24-h recall method. Of the study population, 10,552 (59.9%), 6726 (38.2%), and 347 (1.9… Show more

“…Peanut plays an integral role in livelihood and is a vital food component in the healthy diets of most rural communities (Mofya-Mukuka and Shipekesa, 2013;Jung et al, 2020). Also, a significant increase in the nutritional quality of diets is expected with peanut consumption because peanuts are known to have cardio-protective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties that may influence blood lipid levels, endothelial function, and inflammatory biomarkers (Mahatma et al, 2016).…”

“…142) However, it is important to evaluate which diet patterns might have preventive effects on allergic disease in Koreans because genetic-environmental interactions play a crucial role in the development of allergic diseases and food consumption patterns vary widely among geographical regions and cultures. 143) The KNHANES and KYRBS surveys provide data about the diagnoses of allergic diseases, including AD, asthma, and allergic rhinitis, through self-administered questionnaires. A few studies in the past 5 years have used these Korean survey data to examine the association between childhood allergic dis eases and nutrition (Table 7).…”

“…EBF for 3–4 months has a weak protective effect on wheezing in the first 2 years of life, during which wheezing is associated with vital respiratory infection rather than atopic asthma [ 142 ]. However, it is important to evaluate which diet patterns might have preventive effects on allergic disease in Koreans because genetic-environmental interactions play a crucial role in the development of allergic diseases and food consumption patterns vary widely among geographical regions and cultures [ 143 ].…”

“…Currently, the global peanut cultivation area is estimated at 22.67 million ha with an annual production of 35 million tons ( 18 ). As it is rich in proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals, phospholipids, vitamins, and other bioactive ingredients, peanuts play an important role in daily life ( 19 ). They are recognized as one of the healthy foods for their comprehensive and relatively balanced nutritional components ( 20 ).…”
