Factors Associated with Medical Knowledge Acquisition During Internal Medicine Residency

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Knowledge acquisition is a goal of residency and is measurable by in-training exams. Little is known about factors associated with medical knowledge acquisition.OBJECTIVE: To examine associations of learning habits on medical knowledge acquisition. MEASUREMENTS: Score (percent questions correct) on the IM-ITE adjusted for variables known or hypothesized to be associated with score using a random effects model. RESULTS:When adjusting for demographic, training, and prior achievement variables, yearly… Show more

“…In two studies, attendance at lectures was positively correlated with higher scores on the surgery ITE. 33,34 The data for the internal medicine ITE performance was mixed; there was a positive correlation of lecture attendance with ITE scores of internal medicine residents in two studies, 35,36 but there was a lack of correlation in two other studies. 37,38 In another study, there was no correlation between lecture attendance and the ITE scores of PM&R residents.…”

“…9,11,12 Many medical education research studies have used scores on these standardized examinations as outcome measures. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] The associations of previous USMLE Step scores on subsequent USMLE Step scores and IM-ITE scores are important to correctly account for these examinations in studies of educational outcomes. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate these associations.…”

“…Electronic knowledge resources are capable of providing physicians quick access to evidence-based information, but the effectiveness of these resources in enhancing physicians' knowledge is unknown. One study demonstrated a positive association between use of an electronic resource by residents and performance on a standardized examination 30 ; however, this relationship has not been examined on a national scale.…”
