Factors Associated With Neuromusculoskeletal Injury and Disability in Navy and Marine Corps Personnel

Abstract: Introduction Neuromusculoskeletal injuries (NMSKI) are very common in the military, which contribute to short- and long-term disability. Materials and Methods Population-level NMSKI, limited duty (LIMDU), and long-term disability episode counts in the U.S. Navy (USN) and U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) from December 2016 to August 2021 were extracted from the Musculoskeletal Naval Epidemiological Surveillance Tool. The incidence of … Show more

“…MSKI episodes, LIMDU, and long-term disability counts were extracted from the Musculoskeletal Naval Epidemiological Surveillance Tool (MSK NEST) (Navy Bureau of Medicine & Surgery, Falls Church, VA). This surveillance tool, which has been used in prior study of MSKI in the Navy and Marine Corps, 10 leverages existing validated databases, such as the Military Health System Data Repository (MDR), LIMDU Sailor and Marine Readiness Tracker System (LIMDU SMART), Disability Evaluation System (DES) and Defense Manpower Data Center Reporting System to report injury burden in a deidentified, aggregated database. MSKI episodes within the MSK NEST were derived from healthcare encounters in the MDR and defined using the Army Public Health Center’s Taxonomy for Musculoskeletal Injuries based on an International Classification of Diagnosis, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) classification.…”
