Factors associated with osteoporosis among a sample of Jordanian women referred for investigation for osteoporosis

Abstract: This cross-sectional study was carried out to examine the association between osteoporosis and specific risk factors among 384 women referred to the Radiology Department at King Abdullah University Hospital, Irbid, Jordan during the period September 2009-August 2010 for diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Bone mineral density measurements were carried out using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at both the lumbar spine [AP: L1-L4] and femoral hip (neck, trochanter). Studied risk factors included age, age a… Show more

“…The cumulative exposure to estrogens throughout life has a protective effect 82 Rodica Török-Oance, Melania Bala against osteoporosis [8]. Menarche occurring after the age of 14 is associated with an increased incidence of osteoporosis [9]. The age at menopause onset is a risk factor for long-term morbidity and mortality, late menopause being a risk factor for endometrial and breast cancer, and early menopause being a risk factor for osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases; a risk that occurs because of estrogen deficiency [10].…”

“…This disease also increases the risk of fragility fractures (Chen et al, 2005;Stolk et al, 2007;El-Heis et al, 2013). Hip and vertebral fractures are also associated with high mortality in the 2 years after the event (Hiligsmann et al, 2013).…”

“…Osteoporotic fractures are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality and are therefore a major health care problem in post-menopausal women (Gennari et al, 2005;Stolk et al, 2007;ElHeis et al, 2013). There are several sites of potential occurrence for osteoporotic fracture including the spine, hip, distal forearm, and proximal humerus (El-Heis et al, 2013). The major determinant of bone strength and osteoporotic fracture risk is BMD (Gennari et al, 2005); BMD decrease can be accelerated by factors such as menopause and insufficient dietary calcium (Yilmaz et al, 2011).…”

“…The prevalence of OP was notably diverse in various age groups among Iranian population [13,15], although, no patient less than 40 years had OP [15]. The prevalence of OP in Jordanian women >60 years was significantly higher compared to those <50 years (25.5% vs. 7.4%, respectively) [49]. Advanced age was also a significant predictor of OP in Moroccan postmenopausal women [32,49].…”
