et al.

Abstract: Olfactory function has significant implications for human health, but few risk factors for olfactory decline have been identified. We examined the factors associated with olfactory status and decline over five years in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Neurocognitive Study. A 12-item odor identification test was used to assess olfaction in 6053 participants in 2011–2013 (ARIC visit 5, mean age: 75.6, 41% male, 23% Black race) and in 3235 participants in 2016–2017 (visit 6). We used Poisson regress… Show more

“…In older adults, poor olfaction is age dependent 1 , 2 , 3 and robustly predicts age‐related neurodegenerative diseases and all‐cause death. 45 , 46 Emerging evidence further suggests that poor olfaction is associated with a broad range of age‐related adverse health conditions beyond neurodegenerative diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, 1 , 10 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 diabetes, 51 , 52 cirrhosis, 53 kidney dysfunction, 54 frailty, 55 pneumonia, 18 depression, 56 physical functioning decline, 17 and loss of lean body mass. 57 Some of the evidence comes from well‐designed longitudinal cohorts.…”
