Factors associated with research productivity in higher education institutions in Africa: a systematic review

Abstract: Background: There are low levels of research productivity among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Africa, a situation that is likely to compromise the development agenda of the continent if not addressed. We conducted a systematic literature review to synthesize evidence of the factors associated with research productivity in HEIs in Africa and the researchers’ motives for research. Methods: We identified 838 publications related to research productivity in HEIs in Africa from various databases, from whi… Show more

“…First, attendees can strengthen their networks through active participation in a conference. Vertical links between students or early career researchers and senior researchers can help obtain training opportunities and advice, and horizontal links between researchers of the same seniority are associated with higher productivity, dissemination, and funding (e.g., Cloete et al, 2015;Uwizeye et al, 2022). In addition, depending on the structure of the conference, attendees may be able to see others from similar backgrounds attending and giving lectures (providing them and others with 1 Although our paper may benefit all readers who are interested in increasing research diversity, we have tailored it to two types of readers who may benefit the most from our paper: First, readers who are thinking of organizing educational events, conferences, or workshops, and want to do this in a way that will increase participant and presenter diversity, and second, researchers of all levels who are based in parts of the world that are less commonly represented in the literature.…”

“…This means that the registered advantage of these four continents over the remaining parts of the continent is not due to population size. This is rather due to other factors such as the higher quality of research capacities in these countries, the existence of a robust research infrastructure, and the development of efficient research policies and funding programs [67]. This can be also related to the higher density of medical workers in these four countries (>20 per 10,000 citizens) [68].…”
