Factors Associated With Residual Astigmatism After Toric Intraocular Lens Implantation Reported in an Online Toric Intraocular Lens Back-calculator

Abstract: When present after cataract surgery, higher levels of residual refractive astigmatism were most associated with large differences in measured preoperative to postoperative keratometry. To a lesser degree, intraoperative aberrometry was associated with lower levels. [J Refract Surg. 2018;34(6):366-371.].

“…A similar method of data validation was used with the AstigmatismFix data sets in previous studies. [18][19][20][21][22] The amount of rotation was calculated by taking the difference of the pre-operative intended IOL orientation and the post-operative IOL orientation. An IOL was said to have rotated if this difference was ≥5°.…”

“… 6 Lens misorientation, either due to calculation error or surgical error, can significantly alter the refractive effect of a toric IOL. 7 The variability in surgically induced astigmatism is also recognized as a limiting factor in achieving optimal results. 7 In general, these effects are not large, so good results with toric IOLs are achieved.…”

“… 7 The variability in surgically induced astigmatism is also recognized as a limiting factor in achieving optimal results. 7 In general, these effects are not large, so good results with toric IOLs are achieved. However, they are often considered limiting factors in trying to correct lower levels of astigmatism; when attempting to correct lower magnitudes of astigmatism, the relative effect of small variances is higher.…”
