Factors contributing to performance on the Rey Complex Figure Test in individuals with traumatic brain injury

Abstract: When examining visual memory test results one must be aware of other variables that impact performance, particularly in individuals with traumatic brain injury who have broad cognitive deficits. The present investigation sought to determine the extent to which executive functioning, as operationally defined as perceptual organization, planning, and mental flexibility, impacted Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT) performance. Results indicated that executive functioning measures accounted for between 11% and 16% of … Show more

“…As the ROCFT-DR has been found to be more strongly associated with executive functions than ROCFT-C, the former measure was regarded as more inclusive and globally representative of TBI patients' functioning, and used as a covariate of interest to investigate how inter-hemispheric FC may correlate with neuropsychological measures. 56 Analysis of the relationship between FC and RCFTdelayed performance. FSL's flameo tool was used to perform an ordinary least square regression entering as a factor the demeaned z-scores for the ROCFT-DR. 52 The association between FC and performance of TBI participants in the ROCFT-DR was assessed by examining the correlation between normalized FIG.…”

“…Such an approach also provides information on patient functioning in a form that is more useful to the planning of rehabilitation. However this does not mean that the domains are necessarily independent of each other (Clune-Ryberg et al, 2011;Schwarz et al, 2009). For example, the executive domain includes organisational and planning processes, and impairment in these aspects of cognition would impact on an individual's ability to draw a geometric shape, hence impacting on visual-spatial construction which would, in turn, impact on performance on a measure of visual memory.…”

“…Approximately half of the sample was impaired on both the immediate and delayed trial. While visual memory has been assessed in other follow-up studies of adults with TBI (Ashton et al, 2005;Schwarz et al, 2009), these other studies were completed on samples that were in the early stages following injury. The prevalence of impairment found here suggests that assessment of visual memory should be included in long-term followup studies of TBI as approximately half the sample was still impaired at five years following injury.…”

“…Visual perceptual deficits may be underestimated in aphasia. While the Rey copy is supported by simple verbal instructions, the complex copy task has been shown to involve planning and organization skills for successful completion (Schwarz, Penna, & Novack, 2009). Thus, the relationship with language performance and the Rey copy task could be partly explained by concomitant executive deficits in aphasia.…”
