Factors Contributing to the Properties of Fluoropolymer Barrier Films

Abstract

Films of poly(1, I -di/~ydropentadecafluorooctyl methacrylate) (PFOMA) cast frontf21ronnnted solvents are inert and not wetted by ?nost organic liquidv. They are widely used as banier f i l m in such applications ns confining hibricants to miniature bearing mceways or preventing creep onto critical nonlzrbricated electric relay contact points. Tile qzcality of thejlms, e.g. thickness, surfnce textztre, and resistance to liqziid kibricants, is described in t e r n of their relation to tile formz~lation variables of the PFOMA-solvent systetn. Aspects wlliclr contribzite to optzmization of the bal-rter ftlm properties and the relevc~nce of solvent thermodynnnltc propertzes are di.scrrssed.

Properties of Perfluoropolyethers for Space Applications
