Factors controlling the distributions of dissolved organic matter in the East China Sea during summer

Abstract: to determine the distribution of dissolved organic matter (DoM) in the east china Sea (ecS) during the summer, we measured the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDoM), and chlorophyll a (chl. a) in the upper 100-m layer of this region during July and September 2015. The DOC (r 2 = 0.72 and 0.78 in July and September, respectively) and DON (r 2 = 0.43 and 0.33) were significantly correlated with salinity, suggesting that the river is the primary origin of D… Show more

“…Previous research in the East China Sea showed nonconservative behavior of DOC originating from the Changjiang River due to the presence of a DOC "pulse" [22]. They suggested that microbial decomposition of POM may be the source of the DOC pulse.…”

“…In-situ production of DOC through allochthonous and autochthonous POC decomposition by bacteria also affects DOC dynamics [22]. High levels of POC accumulate in the northern portion of the bay due to allochthonous organic matter transport on tidal currents along with the high primary productivity in this area [7,8].…”

“…The indicative effect of these substances on additive pollution of coalbed methane wells still needs to be studied. C3 can be classified as a tryptophan-like component in proteins, similar to the “T” peak5 [ 51 ], which is mainly produced by biological activities of water body, with a high degree of freshness, which can well indicate the autogenetic process of water body [ 52 , 53 ]. The contents of C1, C2 and C3 respectively accounted for 42.03%, 33.04% and 24.93% of the total fluorescence components.…”

“…However, there was no significant correlation between DOC and Chl-a (p>0.1, Table 1). Previous studies have shown that the correlation between DOC and chlorophyll is complex [51][52][53][54]. There was no significant correlation between DOC and Chl-a in Gehu Lake, it indicates that phytoplankton not playing mainly role in regulating the DOC distribution [53].…”
