Bimodal length of stay in the accommodation sharing economy

This paper analyses the determinants of tourist length of stay in sharing accommodation. Methodologically, the paper proposes a new approach to account for the observed bimodality of length of stay. More specifically, the determinants of length of stay are analyzed by modeling both the conditional mean and conditional modal frequencies, which represent shorter and longer tourist stays, unlike previous contributions on length of stay where modeling has been based exclusively on the conditional mean. The empirical analysis examines the length of stay in sharing accommodation lodgings (Airbnb and Homeaway) of tourists visiting the Canary Islands (Spain) before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show a bimodal distribution of length of stay: 1 and 7 nights in the pre-pandemic period, reduced to 1 and 2 nights in the pandemic period. The results also indicate that the model approach followed in this paper is preferable to other previous bimodality models in terms of estimation simplicity and fit. In addition, the model allows an analysis of the determinants of length of stay and differentiation of the influence of each determinant on shorter and longer stays.

PurposeThis study analyses how the socio-demographic profile of the tourist, trip-related characteristics, distance, and economic conditions in the source country affect pleasure tourists' length of stay behaviours in Barbados.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses “biggish” data (over 3.6 million observations), parametric models (OLS) and statistical learning models (regression trees) to develop a length of stay decision rule to segment pleasure tourists' length of stay. Our sample period is January 2004 to March 2013.FindingsThe analysis revealed a great deal of heterogeneity in the impact of the predictors across segments, which would be typically hidden from simple parametric approaches often used to model length of stay (such as OLS).Practical implicationsThe main implication is that conventional models of length of stay should be complemented with segmentation analyses to shed some light on the heterogeneous length of stay behaviours of specific market segments.Originality/valueMany studies on small tourism-specialising states focus on modelling aggregate arrivals. By modelling micro-data for Barbados, we provide insights on this aspect of tourism demand for small states. Second, very few studies use classification tools to analyse length of stay. The study contributes to the literature through its methodological approach.

English in Madeira: History and features of a lesser-known variety in the Atlantic

‘Lesser-known varieties of English’ (Schreier, 2009; Schreier et al., 2010) have received increasing attention in the last decade. In particular, Englishes on islands with historical and political ties to the United Kingdom or the United States have been described, such as the varieties in Bermuda (Eberle, 2021), Samoa (Biewer, 2020), and Tristan da Cunha (Schreier, 2009). However, Madeira has hitherto received extraordinarily little attention, although it used to be home to a small but enormously influential group of British expatriates who controlled large parts of the economy and owned a considerable amount of land on the island. Even today, approximately 1,000 emigrants from the United Kingdom live permanently in Madeira, which constitutes the second largest group of foreign residents (DREM, 2020b: 11). ‘Madeira’ refers to both a Portuguese archipelago and this archipelago's main island located ca. 737 km west of Morocco's coast (see Figure 1). Overall, Madeira had a population of 267,785 in the last official census from 2011 and is a highly popular tourist destination, with roughly 8 million overnight stays by visitors in 2019 (DREM, 2020a).
