March 24, which reduced homicides and vehicular accidents. However, this average effect does not capture specific forms of violence directed at public figures, as is characteristic of new forms of conflict in Colombia. Between January 1 and July 30, 2020, 173 social leaders were assassinated, of whom 59 were peasants, 58 indigenous, 35 civic or community leaders, 10 Afrodescendants, 8 trade unionists and 3 miners (see Fig. 1). 4 The occurrence of murders has followed the same habitual patterns for years. The ''world of new cases'' that the pandemic has brought us should not make us forget the constant, prevalent problems that for many become normal in everyday life. This sad murder endemic is concentrated mainly in the states of Cauca (n ¼ 58), Antioquia (n ¼ 19), Putumayo (n ¼ 16), Norte de Santander (n ¼ 11) and Narin ˜o (n¼ 10). Before confinement, social leaders were threatened, and sometimes escaped from the territory and hid for a time. During the pandemic there is no escape, elude is not possible and the assassins arrive directly, without mistaking the place. For many Colombian social leaders are riskier to be killed by illegal groups than by COVID-19 during the pandemic. COVID-19 pandemic and persistent occurrence of assassinations is a clear expression of health inequalities.
