Factors Influencing L2 Self-repair Behavior: The Role of L2 Proficiency, Attentional Control and L1 Self-repair Behavior

Abstract: Self-repairs, that is revisions of speech that speakers themselves initiate and complete (Salonen and Laakso in J Child Lang 36:859, 2009. https://doi.org/10.1017/s0305000908009240 ), are frequently used to observe the cognitive and linguistic processes underlying second language (L2) speech production. Previous research has shown that factors such as L2 proficiency, attentional control and native language (L1) self-repair behavior interact with L2 self-repair behavior. To our knowledge, however, no research h… Show more

“…If we deal with such kind of the act, its result greatly affects the activities of the speaker, and if this activity is positive, then we can say with suffi cient confi dence that it is praise. In such a way we can conclude that the praise is more sincere, because the speaker himself/herself is interested in performing actions (Zuniga & Simard, 2019). On the one hand, the author of the compliment can always be accused because of the insincerity, because the relationships between the addressee and the positive qualities of the speaker can not be seen.…”

“…There is evidence (Raupach, 1980; Derwing, Munro, Thomson, & Rossiter, 2009; De Jong, Groenhout, Schoonen, & Hulstijn, 2015) that shows significant correlations between L1 and L2 fluency, with Derwing et al (p. 533) concluding that fluency must be conceived of as an underlying trait, and not a simple indication of proficiency. Exploring what such a trait might be founded upon, Zuniga and Simard (2019) looked at incidence of self-repair in 58 participants with English L2 and French L1, carrying out picture-cue narration tasks that were designed to be similar in terms of plot, length and vocabulary. They did one task in French and the other in English, in counterbalanced order to neutralise any practice or language effect.…”
