Factors influencing postoperative outcomes in patients with symptomatic discoid lateral meniscus

Abstract: Background: Due to its abnormal morphology and ultrastructure, discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is prone to tear and degeneration, leading to clinical symptoms. Arthroscopy is the main treatment for symptomatic DLM; however, postoperative outcomes vary widely due to the effects of diverse factors. This research aims to explore the factors influencing postoperative outcomes of symptomatic DLM. Methods: Patients with DLM who underwent arthroscopic surgery at our hospital from 9/2008 to 9/2015 were enrolled accordi… Show more

“…For meniscal tears lasting >24 months, the outcome of repair is uncertain because of cartilage degeneration. 237 If meniscal repair is not feasible, partial meniscectomy is performed. Total meniscectomy should be avoided in ACL-insufficient knees whenever possible, particularly in young patients.…”

“…For meniscal tears lasting >24 months, the outcome of repair is uncertain because of cartilage degeneration. 237 If meniscal repair is not feasible, When ACL injury is combined with lateral meniscal injuries, it is recommended to consider suturing the meniscus at the time of ACL reconstruction. Agree 36/37, 97.3% partial meniscectomy is performed.…”

“…A retrospective study with 502 patients showed that 4 variables, including male sex, BMI < 18.5 kg/m2, age of onset < 14 years, and symptoms duration < 24 months are related to good postoperative outcomes. [ 19 ] A previous study noted that obesity is associated with worsening knee function after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy, [ 20 ] and Kose et al [ 21 ] , showed that the age at the time of surgery was the only predictor that correlated with the Lysholm score at the final follow-up. In our work, there was no statistically significant difference between age, gender, BMI and symptom durations, thus potentially reducing outcome bias.…”
