Factors influencing residents’ energy use—A study of energy-related behaviour in 57 Swedish homes

Abstract: The aim of this work has been to study everyday energy-related behaviour in homes. All residents in 57 Swedish homes, living in three housing areas, have recorded time diaries over a period of four days, during the same time period in each area. The technical differences between the houses are limited, as the building designs within each housing area are the same. On an aggregated level, the diary data has been analysed with and without typical power data of appliances as well as in relation to measured total … Show more

“…According to previous studies [27][28][29], energy-saving awareness can be influenced by factors, such as "basic information, energy-saving knowledge or cognition, environmental education, energy-saving attitudes, and energy-saving behaviors". Therefore, we set up the equation to quantify these possible potential relationships.…”

“…It takes an approach that goes beyond looking at how people use their dwellings and the corresponding resource use today (Vale and Vale 2010;Hiller 2015;Hendrickson and Wittman 2010), in order to also investigate what they could consider changing or not, and the potential to support low-impact practices and new forms and representations of home.…”

“…Self-report diaries have been used in other field studies in order to estimate the light exposure of people in their every-day life [4546]. Furthermore, other researchers have shown self-report diaries to be a useful and reliable instrument when investigating use of lighting controls and energy-related behavior in the home environment [8182]. In this study, bright daylight exposure outdoors and sleep-activity data were collected from diaries which may have an influence on the reliability of the data.…”
