Factors influencing the addiction characteristics of non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors in adolescents: A case-control study

Abstract: BackgroundMany studies have shown that in the context of public health emergencies, the incidence rate of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) patients increased dramatically. This paper aims to characterize the behavioral characteristics of adolescent NSSI and analyze the influencing factors of NSSI behavior addiction characteristics.MethodsOur research was a case-control study which included 84 adolescents with NSSI (female vs. male: 59 vs. 25) and 84 healthy controls (female vs. male: 53 vs. 31). “… 18 If an individual’s negative emotions decrease immediately after the occurrence of NSSI, their tendency to implement this behaviour will strengthen when they have negative emotions in the future. Moreover, as a repetitive and fixed behaviour, NSSI’s self-reinforcing nature can easily manifest as an avoidance strategy with the passage of time, 43 thus exhibiting addictive characteristics. This can make it more difficult to mitigate NSSI behaviours.…”

“…However, other studies also found a non-significant relationship between childhood emotional abuse and NSSI, and sexual abuse featured prominently in NSSI ( 9 , 10 ). Second, gender could have an influence on NSSI behavior, in which several studies showed girls were more likely to engage in NSSI than their male counterparts ( 9 , 11 , 12 ), though other studies failed to find any significant association between gender and NSSI ( 13 15 ). Third, depression and mood disorders were known predictors of NSSI and this association was found in almost all NSSI risk factor studies ( 9 , 16 , 17 ).…”

“…As measured by Zimet et al, the Cronbach's alpha coe cients for the family, friends, and signi cant others subscales were determined to be 0.87, 0.85, and 0.91, respectively [27]. The PSSS has been widely applied in research on Chinese populations [28][29][30].…”
