PurposeWith a focus on undergraduate music major students in China, the study sought to examine how higher music education institutions prepare professional knowledge, professional skills and soft skills in relevance to music students' employability.Design/methodology/approachThe quantitative survey engaged 359 music students from five music institutions in Western China to report their perceptions toward music curriculum related to employability. The current study examined whether their perception varied based on their gender, location, school, educational background and professional option purpose.FindingsPerception differences in the music curriculum were observed across gender, schools, educational background and professional option purpose. School differences were the most significant among all five factors, followed by professional option purpose, educational background and gender. The location difference was insignificant among the five factors. There were insufficient opportunities for community and industrial engagement in higher music education.Originality/valueThe current study provides an insight into the higher music education curriculum for employability preparation in current China. This is one of the limited empirical studies in Western China to investigate music students' perceptions of professional knowledge and skills and the soft skill line with employability. The findings can serve as a reference for prospective employees in the music industry, policymaking and curriculum design and future research.

Background In response to the wide-ranging concern of career choice, the present study aimed to explore the antecedents and internal mechanisms of choosing a music career. Methods Based on the model of context–process–outcomes, the school context (eg, school musical activities, musical specialized classrooms, music broadcasting and music teachers) was incorporated into an integrated model as predictors. We selected music interest and music value as mediators. A total of 28,018 adolescents in public secondary school completed psychometric questionnaires. Results The results of structural equation modeling indicated that school musical activities, musical classroom, and music teachers were all positively related to music interest and music value, which in turn positively predicted music career choice but the indirect impact of school musical broadcasting on music career choice via music value is not valid. Conclusion This survey investigated a large national sample of adolescents for music career choice and its relevant antecedents based on the context–process–outcomes model. There was a significant influence of school music context on students’ music career choice. Furthermore, music interest and music value partially explained the indirect psychological process between school music context and music career choice.

Educators are finding it challenging to use new teaching methods while keeping effective music pedagogy. The main problem is making a smooth change that keeps students interested and motivated. Balancing the use of new methods and keeping good music teaching is a big challenge for educators. The study aims to explore innovations in music pedagogy by educators and their impact on the motivation of undergraduate music students. This study employed the library research method for data collection. The study identified two primary themes related to innovations in music pedagogy and the motivation of undergraduate music students. The theme of innovations in music pedagogy includes: i) the approach to teaching music, ii) curriculum design, music instruments, and teaching tools, and iii) flexibility and creativity in teaching. Furthermore, the motivation of undergraduate music students involves i) educator's inspiration and music learning motivation, ii) the application of curriculum, music instruments, and teaching tools, and iii) problem-solving, expression, and appreciation in music. This study concludes that balancing innovation and effective pedagogy is crucial in music education. Navigating this transformative landscape requires careful consideration to maintain student engagement. The study contributes insights into the impact of innovative teaching approaches on student motivation in music education, identifying key themes and factors influencing motivation. Future studies should explore specific strategies for balancing tradition and innovation, investigate long-term effects on musical proficiency, and examine the role of technology in enhancing music education.
