Berbagai tantangan yang perlu dihadapi dengan adanya perubahan revolusi industri 4.0 yang membuat 75-375 juta pekerja mengalami pergeseran profesi. Bahkan, banyak profesi manapun terkena imbasnya karena digantikan dengan mesin-mesin. Selaras dengan perkembangan karier pada mahasiswa yang perlu untuk mengeksplor mengenai karier mereka. Hal tersebut menjadi tantangan terendiri bagi mahasiswa untuk beradaptasi dalam menghadapi perubahan revolusi ini. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menguji peran perilaku eksplorasi karier terhadap pengaruh dukungan teman pada adaptabilitas karier mahasiswa tingkat akhir. Partisipan penelitian berjumlah 538 mahasiswa di Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tanggerang, dan Bekasi (JABODETABEK). Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan metode convenience sampling. Penelitian ini menggunaan tiga alat ukur yaitu Career Related Peer Support (Zhang & Huang, 2018), Career Exploration Survey (Salim & Preston, 2019) dan Career Adapt-Ability Scale (Sulistiani, Suminar, dan Hendriani, 2018). Pengolahan data menggunakan simple mediation model 4 PROCESS for SPPS by Hayes. Hasil analisis mediasi menjelaskan bahwa dukungan teman mempengaruhi adaptabilitas karier pada mahasiswa tingkat akhir melalui perilaku eksplorasi karier secara penuh, dengan nilai indirect effect sebesar 0,1347. Mahasiswa yang mempersepsikan dukungan teman terkait karier cenderung memunculkan perilaku mencari informasi, mengikuti kegiatan terkait karier (magang, seminar, dll), dan meninjau kembali informasi yang mereka dapat yang berdampak pada peningkatkan kemampuan adaptabilitas karier dalam menghadapi berbagai tantangan untuk menghadapi transisi kuliah-ke-kerja.

This study considers the career identities of Vietnamese students studying at an offshore (Australian) university in Vietnam. The students had completed the first module of a new career development learning program called Career Passport. As part of the program, students were required to write a narrative on their ‘career story’ to reflect on their experiences and synthesise their learning. The study drew on a social constructionist and narrative psychology approach to explore the major influences on the career identity that emerged from the students’ narratives. The strongest influence on the students’ career identities and career decision-making was family, which is in accordance with the collectivist cultural values of Vietnam. Somewhat less expected was the effect of various media, such as film and television. Despite the influence of family, the narratives reflect a strong desire to meet individual values, needs and interests in what the students would like their future careers to look like. The latter two findings perhaps indicate that Vietnamese students at an international university are more influenced by Western values and expectations of ‘career’ than their counterparts who study at domestic universities.

Parental influence on female vocational intentions in the Arabian Gulf

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine parental career-related behavior (PCB) in relation to the vocational intentions of female nationals enrolled at higher education institutions in the United Arab Emirates. Design/methodology/approach A conceptual framework was constructed to examine the interplay between the PCB factors of support, interference and lack of engagement, against context-relevant dimensions of gendered sociocultural barriers, public sector preferences and the likelihood itself of labor market entry. Survey data from face-to-face encounters (n=335) was collected. Findings Parental support was found to significantly reduce the perceived sociocultural barriers to workforce participation. Parental interference amplified these barriers and also increased public sector preferences. Those with educated fathers were more likely to seek labor market entry and consider atypical career paths, while those with a parent working in the private sector were more willing to consider this sector. Research limitations/implications One limitation was a sample comprising only female students, nonetheless it implies PCB has an impact on “national” female labor force participation (FLFP). Therefore, seeking to engage parents as more active stakeholders in vocationally related HEI interventions would benefit from greater policy attention. Originality/value This paper is the first to consider parental influence on FLFP using the PCB construct. Its value is in the framework model presented and its contribution to the discourse on the Arabian Gulf’s labor market dynamics.
